Thanksgiving is a fun holiday in Canada and for our neighbours to the south, their biggest of the year. Pumpkin pie is a staple and it includes a specific mix of warming spices. But why make your own and how?
Well, pre-mixed commercial brands often contain other ingredients that cause issues for those of us with allergies, or just chemical preservatives and the like that you probably want to steer clear of.
DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice
It’s so easy to make your own from spices you likely already have in the cupboard.
With pumpkin season only just begun and all of the delicious pumpkin spice recipes that we love just waiting to be made: lattes, muffins, cakes, loaves and the pie itself… Why not put together a batch of your own spice mix?
4 tbsp ground true cinnamon
2 tbsp ground ginger
1 tbsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp ground allspice
1 tbsp ground clove
Mix these up in a small mason jar with a tight-fitting lid and then measure out the amount of pumpkin pie spice your recipe calls for as needed!
If you prefer more or less of a different spice you can adjust your recipe accordingly. Or if you don’t care for one of the spices – leave it out! The beauty of making it yourself.
Enjoy this blend in your pumpkin spice smoothies, lattes, cookies, muffins, loaves and, of course, pies!
